Sorry To Tell You This...

There is an unbelievable trend showing up in the workplace. More and more bullies at work are "hiding" and claiming they are victims of bullying in the workplace! That's right, the bullying perpetrator claiming to be the victim of bullying. Some of these individuals are very cunning and clever at this. Unfortunately, there's not much the true target or victim of workplace bullies can do to prevent this insidious role reversal.

The good news is there are ways to prevent the work bully from using this tactic as an additional weapon against you. Remember the workplace bully is extremely insecure. The bully at work is almost always intimidated by individuals who are...

  • intelligent
  • confident
  • competent
  • talented
  • ethical
  • team oriented
  • positive
  • like by others

....and among other things, stay away from creating workplace drama. Essentially the type of employee every credible employer would or should want. Workplace bullies love and crave what I call the three C's...

  • Chaos
  • Confusion
  • Corruption

The following are some ways you can expose the work bullies "I'm the one being bullied" game.

The "push button"
Being harassed regularly by a bully "terrorist" can be extremely stressful on the victim. It's easy to get "sucked" into the bullies attempts to get you into a yelling exchange with them. The tendency will be to respond with something the bully can use to claim you are bullying her. If there are no witnesses to the event(s) then it's your word versus the bully. This could put you at great disadvantage especially if the bully is a manager.

NO retaliation
Similar to the bully trying to "push buttons" with you, whatever you do try to stay CALM, COOL and COLLECTED! It's natural to protect ourselves from attack. The bully may try to provoke you into doing or saying something which can be interpreted as bullying them.

NO social media
One of the best weapons a victim can give a workplace bully is to use your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or other accounts for emotional and angry rants about how evil your bully tormentor is. Particularly if you name the bully specifically, he can then claim you are the harassing bully.

Documentation
I preach the gospel of how important it is to document all workplace activities that may be used adversely against you! Keep a record of any and all situations and encounters with the workplace bully. When it became obvious I was in a work environment of discrimination, harassment, bullying and retaliation, documenting these events became second nature to me.

It can be tedious and stressful at times. I trained myself to keep a little notepad in my pocket. However, maintaining an accurate record of emails, personal notes, department memos, especially the bullies correspondence and of witnesses can and will be to your advantage!

These are some of the ways you can prevent the workplace bully from perpetrating the fraud the he or she is the bully victim! I have a great video about workplace bullies...
