Age discrimination in the workplace is becoming more prevalent. Here are some alarming statistics, employees fifty or over who are unemployed may be in the job market for 35 weeks prior to re-employment! On the other side of the age coin job seekers 20 to 30 years old can expect a job hunt to last about 20 to 25 weeks. There are several reasons over 40 employees and career seekers are finding it increasingly harder to find a job.
The stereotyping of older employees involve the erroneous employer belief that vintage workers...
Are hard to train or re-train
Are unhealthy and pose increased health insurance risks
Are prone to higher absenteeism because of health issues
Are not usually tech savvy
Are slow to comprehend new concepts
Are just slow
Another amazing statistic reveals that 25% of all employees believe these stereotypes about workers over 50!
Here's the good news, recently the (AARP) American Association of Retired Persons has thrown its' considerable weight behind a new proposed age discrimination law in Congress. The Bill (POWADA) Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act would make it easier for older employees to prove age discrimination and provide greater protection from retaliation.
